My PhD research focusses on democratic recession and specifically democratic defence. What happens when democratically elected elites erode democracy, who stands up to defend democracy, and when are they succesfull?

During my studies, I was a research assistent at Leiden University, conducting research for the European Asylum Support Office. Additionally, I was a research intern at the International Institute for Social History and at the Netherlands Commission for UNESCO. Lastly, I was a teaching assistent, teaching seminars and lecturs as well as providing grading assistance.

During this selective and intensive two-year programme, I developed an interest in the role of legitimacy and perception in politics and international relations, and received extensive training in research design and quantitative and qualitative methods. In addition, I followed the Leiden Leadership Programme.

During this programme, I focussed on archival research. My thesis on Dutch development aid in Africa was awarded a 9.5/10.
